Wednesday 11th March 2009There is no overkill...

...there is only "Open Fire", and "time to reload". Rule 37.

I got my new Mac Mini today, and as I was driving home I realised that I probably have too many computers. Then I remembered the above quote, and my mind was at peace.

Out of interest I figured I would list all the computers I have in the house right now.

Make/Model OS CPU RAM Hard Disk
Custom Desktop Windows XP x64 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz 4GB 1,320GB
Dell XPS M1330 Windows Vista
OS X 10.5.4 Dualboot
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz 4GB 400GB
Apple Mac Mini OS X 10.5.6 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz 2GB 120GB
Custom Desktop Windows XP Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz 1GB 120GB
Custom Desktop CentOS 4.1 Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz 1GB 120GB
Custom Desktop MS-DOS 6.2 Intel 486DX4-100 16MB ~800MB

Note that these are only MY computers, defined as computers I purchased. Andrea has two Toshiba laptops as well (Windows XP and Windows 98).

Yes, the 486 still works (at least it did the last time I tried to use it), but I don't actually use it. I also haven't used either of the P4s for a while, and seldom use the XP64 box now either. Still, that's quite a number of computers for one person.

One interesting thing to note; all the computers in the above list have Intel processors. Thinking back, I have never owned a computer with anything other than an Intel processor. The complete list historically is as follows (dates are approximate):

  • 1987 - Excel XT - Intel 8086 - 8MHz
  • 1992 - Intel 80386SX - 33MHz
  • 1994 - Intel 80486DX2 - 66MHz
  • 1995 - Intel 80486DX4 - 100MHz (originally bought for my sister, I got it later)
  • 1997 - Intel Pentium 133MHz
  • 1998 - Intel Pentium 2 - 233MHz
  • 1998 - Intel Celeron Laptop - 266MHz
  • 1999 - Intel Pentium 3 - 500MHz
  • 2001 - Intel Pentium 3 - 1GHz
  • 2003 - Intel Pentium 4 - 2.4GHz
  • 2005 - Intel Pentium 4 - 3.0GHz
  • 2007 - Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.4GHz
  • 2008 - Intel Core 2 Duo Laptop - 2.2GHz
  • 2009 - Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini - 2.0GHz

14 computers in 22 years. That's not too bad I guess.
