Heroes Quest

The very first miniatures I ever owned were from the Hero Quest game I received as a present. After a few months, I decided that the models would look better if they were painted. So I got hold of some simple colours and tried painting them. The results were less than impressive. Disasterous would perhaps be the right word.

Years later, when I started playing D&D again, I decided that the Hero Quest models could actually be quite useful, so I dug them out, stripped the paint off them (brake fluid), and started again.

The skeletons were the first models I tried. The method used was quite simple, though I went through a couple of not so successful attempts before I found one I liked.

A primary base-coat of Chaos Black was followed with a Skull White drybrush coat. Colour and highlights were added with a Flesh Wash, and the whole thing was drybrushed in Bleached Bone.

The more obviously red one in the picture only differed from the above method in one step. I used a white base rather than a black one.

The final touch was the numbering on the scythes. This makes it a lot easier to keep track of them in a roleplaying game.
